Maria Gruppelaar

Maria Gruppelaar

My work revolves around colour, form and material. Processes such as construction, repair, change and the ability to improvise are visible. I create both smaller wall objects and paintings.

The wall objects made of wood or cardboard refer to possibilities to make something new from what is broken, worn-out or discarded. What is created has a renewed energy and its own dynamic.

The paintings are abstract, layered and colorful compositions created from intuition and imagination.

The joy in the physical process of making and painting is also important—it brings energy and a good mood and is an essential part of my work.

I make the paint myself from egg, water and pigments: egg tempera. Not only because of its wonderful properties but also to keep my ecological footprint as small as possible.
